Get the thrill of the chill: Top Tips to Fuel our dog's snow-filled adventures!

Posted By petlover2011 on Mar 4, 2011 at 11:27AM

With abundant snow and extreme cold temperatures gripping much of the country, this year’s winter is more challenging than usual to many of us, and for our pets as well. Whether it is the challenges of dog walking on the slush-filled sidewalks of New York City, or running the trails of the Alaskan wilderness, winter brings special concern for our pets.

Eagle Pack® Staff Veterinarian and 20-year volunteer for the Iditarod® Veterinarian team, Dr. Al Townshend says pet parents need to take special care of their dogs’ diet and exercise.  A winner of the highly regarded Golden Stethoscope Award for going above and beyond on the Iditarod race trail, Dr. Townshend also helped to develop customized formulas for Eagle Pack, the Official Dog Food Sponsor of this year’s race. His work with champion sled dog mushers helped to elevate the standard and quality of nutritional foods for not only canine athletes, but also household pets.

“Even though it is cold outside, dogs still need to get out and exercise. Less activity in the winter can encourage weight gain, decreased muscle tone and problems with the skin and hair coat,” he said. “From chasing snowballs to skijoring, there are lots of winter activities you can enjoy with your pet.”

Snow shoeing or trail running with your dog? The colder the weather the more calories a pet will need in order to stay warm and maintain weight. “A good idea would be to step up to a higher energy diet during the winter,” Dr. Townshend explains. “Eagle Pack Power is an ideal diet for those outdoor active athletes during periods of increased activity given its higher levels of protein and fat, providing maximum calories. Eagle Pack Original Adult Pork Meal and Chicken Meal Formula also contains increased levels of calories for those dogs that spend time outside in colder climates.”

Similar to the demanding nutritional needs of an Olympian, canine athletes also require a particular diet for optimum performance. Eagle Pack prides itself on providing Nutrition in Action®, naturally meeting the nutritional needs of active canine companions.

Eagle Pack formulas for dogs and cats are made with natural, nutrient-rich ingredients without fillers or artificial preservatives. Eagle Pack dry and canned formulas come in a variety of flavors and sizes and are available nationwide at independent pet specialty stores. I'm loving this bright, floral fleece hoodie. It's reminds me of spring, so it's perfect for cold winter days.

I also love this stylish raincoat. I got it for my pup. It has a detachable hoodie and is lined with fleece. It's perfect for the rain we've been getting in San Diego!

Weight Gain

Posted By syed2011 on Oct 23, 2010 at 4:54AM

To gain weight, keep track of your calorie intake. This includes during mealtimes and when snacking and your daily activity level. You can then calculate how much energy you take in per day versus how much you expend to know by how much to increase your calorie intake for more weight gain.

Pup Art from JoeytheDog Artworks

Posted By Amanda Postiglione on May 14, 2010 at 10:26AM

New to the group here... so forgive me as I'm still figuring out how all of this works.  :)

The product I'm posting on is a little less for my pup and a little more for me, unless Bella develops a streak of vanity, that is!  I had a portrait done of my gal - it's hanging in my home now and I have gotten a ton of compliments on it!  (It was pretty cheap too - only $100.)  I also got some notecards with the portrait on it, and they are adorable.  I can't figure out how to post the picture here, but I can add the link to the site.  The company is called JoeytheDog Artworks and my portrait is shown here:  http://joeythedogartworks.com/Portrait_Bella.html - you can also buy premade notecards and stuff on the site as well.  Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone else out there wanted a little "pup art" in their home too.

America's Favorite Dog

Posted By mypetmug on Jan 31, 2010 at 9:33AM

For the 19th consecutive year 'America' has voted and chosen the Labrador Retriever as their favorite. This according to AKC registration analysis. In at Number 2 is the German Shepard, finding favor again possibly because of their security efforts home and abroad. Rounding out the rest of the list are, in order, Golden Retriever, Beagle, Boxer, Dachshund, Poodle, Shih Tzu. So it seems to me that America's Favorite Dog ought to be (and, in my opinion) is the mutt. Yup, the street dog, Heinz 57, jack of all breeds, whatever you choose to call them. I think that more people own a less than pedigreed dog and sadly, there are more of them not in homes at all. Let's not rush out and get the most popular, or favorite, or the same dog a celebrity has. We've seen in years past what that does to a breed. When Lady & The Tramp was released in the late 70's, so many kids wanted cocker spaniels that the overbreeding of the dog led to serious problems. Similarly, when 101 Dalmations was re-released, shelters became flooded with dalmations a couple years later. Most recently, we all are aware of the many chihuahuas needing homes because famous Hollywood types were toting them around just to be noticed, aka 'the Hilton Factor'. There's nothing wrong with a Pedigree or purebred or 'America's Favorite Dog', but let's not forget that a person's favorite dog is their dog, as it should be. It can't be said too often or too emphatically, adopt a dog from your local shelter, they'll love you for it!

MyPetLikes - SybSab Speak - Blue Dog Bakery

Syb:  So I'm grocery shopping and see this great product from Blue Dog Bakery - lowfat dog treats.  I also happen to have a great $1.00 off, extra incentive, always good!  I bring them home and my Puggle Sam is already sniffing the bag and jumping on me.  His beagle nose knows there's something good inside.  These treats are not only smartly packaged, they apparently taste delicious.  They even come in convenient 100 calorie packs, just like my favorite treats!

Sab:  My two dogs, Tulip and Lola love these treats too.  And they won't eat just anything, sometimes they can be finicky, but not when it comes to these.  They even seem to recognize the brightly colored packaging and Big Blue Dog when I break out the box.  Better hide it when I'm away, you never know these two just may figure out a way to open the cupboard!
